What is the artist's fee guideline (RKH)?
The fee is compensation for labor of the artist for an exhibition (production) and loan of the work (use). The calculator or calculation table is used to calculate a minimum fee for partial performances (1), (2) and (4):
- Manufacturing new work and/or adapting existing work (labor),
- work (labor) as an extension of producing work for an exhibition,
- Other work for an event or exhibition (labor),
- providing artist-owned work for exhibition (use).
Sub-performance (3) is not calculated by the calculator or calculation table. This is subject to a variable remuneration that corresponds to the salary (including vacation pay and a surcharge for employer expenses) of an employee employed by the art institution with comparable duties. For this, see for example the Guideline Job and Wage Structure Presentation Institutions or the Museum CLA. Subperformance 3 covers a wide range of activities related to curating or producing an event or exhibition,
Reimbursement of (dis)expenses such as material costs, production costs, travel costs and insurance costs are not included in the fee. Additional arrangements should be made about this.
What does RKH calculate?
The calculator calculates the minimum fee per artist per exhibition based on a number of variables. These are standardized and standardized minimum amounts. The calculator provides a floor amount that can be reasonably increased during contract negotiations between artist and art institution for exhibitions without a sales goal. For example, institutions with a turnover of €500,000 and more are expected to raise the amounts reasonably.
Can I pay an artist less than the standard amounts?
Institutions submitting applications to, at least, the State and the State Culture Funds are reviewed for compliance with the Fair Practice Code and application of the artist's fees guideline.
Does the guideline fee apply per artist or per work?
The fee applies per artist. In exhibitions with combinations of "new work," "existing work" or "modified existing work," the category with the highest fee is leading in determining the minimum fees to the artist.
How do I calculate the fee for a short event such as a lecture or workshop?
If the lecture or workshop is the main artistic outcome of the artist's work process, the guideline artist's fees can be used for this. Keep in mind that the (dis)costs, such as production costs or fees for third parties, are not part of the fee. If the lecture or workshop is secondary to the artistic work of the artist, or is part of the fringe program of the exhibition, for example, a different type of realistic compensation can be granted. For fees for lectures or workshops secondary to the artistic work of the artist, no contribution will be granted from the temporary arrangement Corona support Kunstenaarshonorarium van het Mondriaan Fonds.
How do I calculate the fee for performance art?
The calculator does not distinguish between the disciplines in which visual artists work. The amounts also apply to performances. Keep in mind that (dis)costs, such as production costs or fees for third parties, are not part of the fee. For payment of performers/dancers, please refer to the collective labor agreement for theater and dance.
How do I calculate the fee for a permanent presentation?
The artist's fee guideline does not apply to permanent exhibitions. To determine the amount of the fee for permanent works, the National Building Department's guideline can be used.
How do you calculate fees for duos and collectives?
For equivalent collaborations, fees apply per artist. Consider what is most applicable to the situation: a solo presentation, duo presentation or group presentation. In the case of unequal collaborations, for example in the case of assistants, it does not apply.
How should an honorarium for a short event such as a lecture or workshop be calculated?
According to RKH, what is meant by new work?
New work is work developed by the artist on commission or at the request of the art institution and/or work by the artist selected by the curator that has not previously been presented in a publicly accessible exhibition.
Does RKH also apply to sales exhibitions?
The artist fees guideline does not apply to exhibitions with a sales purpose. Supporting sales of T-shirts or books, for example, do not make an exhibition a sales exhibition. Separate arrangements can be made about the production and sale of these goods.
Can I request compensation for fees?
The Mondriaan Fund offers support in the form of an allowance for costs through the Artist's Fee Scheme. This arrangement is open to institutions that do not finance artists' fees from structural funds.
Through the scheme, institutions can receive compensation of 50% if they pay at least the standard amounts in the guideline Artist's fees. This scheme also applies to projects starting in 2025, as long as the budget has not been exhausted.
According to the calculator, is the fee exclusive or inclusive of VAT?
The standard amounts in the calculator and calculation table do not include VAT.
